The 11 days Rwanda wildlife safari is designed to fulfill every traveler’s desire to discover Rwanda’s wildlife. It involves visiting the most interesting destinations of Rwanda like Volcanoes national park, Nyungwe forest national park, Lake Kivu and Akagera national park. Akagera is the only park that gives a chance to travelers to enjoy a boat cruise as they glance at aquatic animals, while Lake Kivu offers a recreational treat to visitors after gorilla adventure in Volcanoes national park.

City tour and transfer to Akagera national park – 1st day

After having breakfast, proceed on a city tour with a visit to the genocide places like Kigali genocide memorial center, Nyamata church, Ntarama memorial church and visiting these places will give you a chance to know what exactly took place during the horrific genocide era.

Have lunch in Kigali before departing to Akagera national park which is found in the eastern province of Rwanda. This savannah park provides shelter to a number of big game species which can be encountered on a morning or evening game drive.

Wildlife to look out for include; Elephants, Giraffes, plain Zebras, rear roan antelopes, impalas, leopards and many others with lots of bird species of both savannah, water and woodlands. Dinner and overnight will be served at the lodge.

Game drive and boat cruise – 2nd day

After a cup of hot coffee, proceed on a morning game drive where you will sight the beautiful sun rise exposing the marvelous savannah landscapes that stretches to the Tanzanian border. Some of the wildlife to spot in this park include Zebras, Giraffes, antelopes, Elephants, leopards on rear occasions, buffaloes and many others. The morning game drive gives travelers a chance to meet the early riser and a number of wildlife. Return to the lodge for breakfast and lunch.

In the evening, go for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, the largest lake in Akagera national park. The boat cruise in this park enables travelers to spot animals that come to drink water along the banks of the lake animals like elephants, roan antelopes, buffaloes and many others. Hippos and the aquatic animals are also spotted plus a number of bird species. After return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Akagera national park to volcanoes national park 3rd day

Wake up in the morning and have breakfast, then head to volcanoes national park, the proud home of mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. While on the way, make a stopover to view the twin lakes, Ruhondo and Bulera in the foothills of Mount Muhabura and proceed to the park thereafter.

You will have lunch at the lodge and spend the whole evening enjoying the nature and scenery of the Virunga ranges.

Dinner and overnight will be served at the lodge.

Gorilla trekking and visit Iby’iwachu cultural village – 4th day

After an early breakfast, you will prepare to set off for the great adventure of gorilla trekking in the interior of Volcanoes national park. You will head to the park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing regarding mountain gorilla behaviors and trekking etiquette.

You will be led by the ranger guide through the hikes in the park, and soon you will come face to face with the mighty mountain gorillas. While trekking, travelers are only allowed to spend one hour in the presence of these very peaceful giants. And at the end of the trek, you will head back to your lodge for refreshments and lunch.

In the afternoon, go for a cultural encounter at Iby’iwachu cultural village and this village will give you an opportunity to gain a fascinating glimpse into old age traditions of Rwandans. Later you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Golden monkey trekking and visiting Dian Fossey grave – 5th day

After breakfast, go for golden monkey trekking which is also a thrilling adventure and can be experienced only in volcanoes national park in Rwanda. You will be briefed by the guide and after you enter the forest to search for the elusive golden monkeys. You will spot them playing as they jump from one branch of the tree to the other and all this will make your safari very exciting and memorable.

In the afternoon after lunch, go for the Dian Fossey grave hike. It is found at the former Karisoke research center where the famous primatologist, Dian spent some 20 years studying the mountain gorillas. The hike to the grave is quite spectacular, going through bamboo zones and afro montane habitats dotted with numerous birds.

Return to the lodge thereafter for dinner and overnight.

Transfer to Lake Kivu – 6th day

After breakfast, depart to the beautiful Lake Kivu. You will experience the incredible scenery along the way. This lake is one of the African great lakes and it lies on the border between Rwanda and D.R Congo, located in the Albertine rift, the western branch of the East African rift valley.

Have lunch at the lake shores, dinner will be served and overnight stay at the lodge.

Boat cruise on Lake Kivu – 7th day

After breakfast, you will go for a boat cruise on Lake Kivu where you will enjoy viewing the various islands in the lake and the scenic beauty of the surrounding terraced hills.

Retreat to the lodge for lunch and spend the rest of the evening at the sand beach. Dinner and overnight will be served at the lodge.

Transfer to Nyungwe forest national park – 8th day

Transfer to Nyungwe forest national park after breakfast. The park is home to many species of chimpanzees and owl faced and colobus monkeys.

It also has a canopy walkway which is found in the Igishigishi trail. This canopy walkway is a high suspension bridge with views over the valley and surrounding forest. This park is also a great birding destination in Rwanda. Dinner and overnight will be spent at the lodge.

Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest national park – 9th day

Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe forest takes you deep in the forest to experience and appreciate nature. Chimpanzee tracking is done early morning with packed breakfast, water and snacks. You are expected to be at the briefing point as early at 7:30am from where you will receive information on the expected behaviors and possible length of your trek.

Nyungwe forest is rich botanical diversity and home to 13 species of primates like L’Hoest’s monkeys, Rwenzori colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys and many others. Once the chimpanzees are sighted, you only allowed to spend an hour with them and after you go back to your hotel for lunch. Spend the entire evening at the lodge.

Canopy walk in Nyungwe forest national park 10th day

After breakfast, head for the incredible canopy walk. Travelers move over the tall trees while viewing the landscape and the green of the park. While on the canopy walk, travelers spot different bird species and also primates like monkeys plus a variety of plant species.

Return to the lodge for lunch and enjoy the evening at the park while listening the sounds of primates and birds. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Nyungwe forest to Kigali city – 11th day

You will wake up in the morning and have breakfast, then begin your journey to Kigali; however you will have a stopover at the traditional king’s palace in Nyanza where you will learn more about the history of Rwandan traditions and also at the national museum in Butare where you will have lunch from.

Proceed on the drive and guide will drop you at the hotel in Kigali or at the airport for your departure flight.
